If you are like me, over the years you have seen friends and family members forsake the faith they once held dear. Their hearts have become hard and they have turned away from Jesus. It is heartbreaking and it yet was no different in the first century. This passage today is a challenge for us to not allow the slow drift to occur- for our hearts to be challenged and for us to challenge our brothers and sisters in Christ every day to remember the beauty and wonder of the gospel and to treasure Jesus in our lives. Let us not be found sleeping on that day!

The following guide is a resource for your personal time of abiding with the Lord and for your Community Group when you meet.  It can also be used for times with family or friends around the table.

Take time to be reminded of our shared vision- We are abiding in Christ that we might experience Gospel Transformation in our homes, neighborhoods, work places and city.

+ Ask… What are you/we thankful to the Lord for? (e.g., how is he working in our community group or the lives of someone we are walking with to discover the gospel?)

+ What is one need in this circle/our Community Group and how can we meet it together?

Take some time for song (guitar, hymn, acapella or read a Psalm) and extended prayer as an individual/community.  A simple path of prayer is to pray through one of the Psalms as a group or use the acronym ACTS (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication).

+ WHAT is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that I/we learn? (Use the questions interspersed through the passage to help make additional observations to clarify the main point)

12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

+ In v. 12 what is it that causes us to turn away or forsake God? Note: The Heart in the Scripture is what motivates and ultimately we will act out of.  Also a better translation to “Fall away” is to turn away or forsake

+ In v.13 what is it that guards us from turning away? What frequency are we to do this over what duration?

+ Continuing into v.14 what is it that demonstrates whether our salvation (sharing in Christ) is real or counterfeit?

+ This is a quote from Psalm 95 throwing back to Exodus 17.  Read Exodus 17.1-7- What happened in the account that the writer of Hebrews is using to warn his Jewish audience of?
+ How would you summarize verses 12-15 in your own words?

PROCESS (In Breakouts of 2-3’s, guys/girls)

+ HOW is the Lord calling me to action/obedience? Is there sin to confess, a next step to take, how has it gone since last time?  (Below are a couple of ideas to help prompt responses if needed)

+ Is there a brother or sister in Christ you know who has an unbelieving heart that you need to exhort?

+ WHO am I walking with and praying for to discover Jesus, what is my next step? (e.g., spend time with them, set-up an intentional time to share your story, begin a discovery study on the teachings of Jesus with them)

+ Is there someone who doesn’t yet know Christ the Lord is calling you to exhort with the gospel?
