Today is Wednesday, November 14th, 2018. Today’s passage of study is on Paul’s command to the beginning church to seek the heavenly things above. In this case it is the spiritual gifts of prophecy and speaking in tongues. But, why is Paul so adamant for the church to seek these things? To do cool ‘spiritual’ things for religiosity sake, or is there a deeper, larger purpose at hand? -Max

The following guide is a resource for you to use in your personal time of solitude with the Lord as well as when you connect with the Community that you facilitate.  It can also be used for times with family or friends around the table.

[1 Corinthians 14:1-5]
1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

+ WHAT are some of the main ideas that emerge from these verses?
(Use these questions to help make additional observations to clarify the main
_ What does Paul first command the early believers seek out in v.1?
_ Who does the believer ultimately speak to when speaking in tongues? What does the believer speak of in tongues? v.2
_ Who does the believer prophesying speak to? What does Paul say is the purpose of prophecy? What is the purpose of the believer speaking of tongue in the Spirit? V.3-4
_ Why does Paul say Prophesying is the greater gift of need? Through prophesying what happens to the Church? V5
_Ultimately what is the real reason believers are to seek the gifts that God gives us by His Spirit? For religiosity, or for another reason? What does Paul’s concern seem to really be; Gifts in themselves, or something larger?

PROCESS (In Breakouts of 2-3’s, guys/girls)

+ HOW is the Lord calling me to action/obedience? Is there sin to confess, a next step to take, how has it gone since last time?
_What aspect of love am I withholding from others? What aspects of love do I seek from others?
_Is my love active and selfless? Are there areas that I do not act out of a place of love and become a noisy gong?
_Am I enacting love out of a knowledge and overflow of God’s love for me?

+ WHO am I walking with and praying for to discover Jesus, what is my next step? (e.g., Build trust by spending time with them, set-up an intentional time to share your story, begin a discovery study on the teachings of Jesus with them)
