Today is Wednesday, January 3rd, 2018. As I have read through the past few Dailies, I have been challenged to re-evaluate my giving. What am I giving? What is my motivation? Is this truly an act of worship? I am reminded and refreshed by this passage. Giving is much more than the amount given - it is the heart behind it. As you read this passage, ask yourself these same questions. - Peter.
(Take time to write down responses to these questions or discuss in your group)
- What is one thing that brings me happiness that would be hard for me to give up? Why?
- Describe your relationship with money.
Take some time to thank and praise God for who He is, to pray for those you are walking with, for the needs you/group are facing, and for the Spirit to open your heart and eyes as you read the passage, which has been completely inspired by God.
DISCOVER [Mark 12:41-44]
+ WHAT is this passage saying and what do we learn? (Use these questions below each portion of text to clarify the main point)
41 And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
_How much did the rich give? How much did the poor widow give?
_Whom does Jesus say gave more? Why?
_Describe the motivation of the widow in giving. Why does she give the money she had to live on? What does this say about her faith?
_Why is the dollar amount not as significant as the heart behind giving?
+ HOW am I compelled to confess sin and how does the gospel compel me to respond with a simple step of action/obedience? (Here are some thoughts to discuss in break-outs)
- What do you depend on more: God or money?
- How does your giving reflect your heart?
+ WHO are you walking with to discover or grow in Jesus and what is your next step with them, how can we help?
