Today is Wednesday, September 5th, 2017. This week we begin our Autumn series through the book of Acts. In today’s passage we discover the laying of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples, as well as the power and ability of the Holy Spirit within us. Please join us at our gatherings, where we worship the Triune God unapologetically. Gatherings are at 9 and 10:45am Sundays. Have a great day!. - Max
(Take time to write down responses to these questions or discuss in your group)
_ Has there ever been a time you have felt an overwhelming feeling of the presence of the Holy Spirit? How was God magnified? What was accomplished?
_ How is the Lord impacting someone you are walking with (to help grow in or discover Jesus)?
Take some time to thank and praise God for who He is, to pray for those you are walking with, for the needs you/group are facing, and for the Spirit to open your heart and eyes as you read the passage, which has been completely inspired by God.
DISCOVER [Acts 2:1-13]
+ WHAT is this passage saying and what do we learn? (Use these questions below each portion of text to clarify the main point)
2 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
_ What day does this event take place on? Who was there? v.1
_ What was the sound like, that the gathering heard? How present was this sound? v.2
_ What rested on each disciple? What were the disciples then filled with? v.3-4
_ What did the disciples begin to do once the Holy Spirit filled them? v.4
_ Who do we find present in Jerusalem, witnessing this event? v.5-11
_ What question do these witnesses ask? v.7
_ Through all the languages being spoken, being heard and called out by these witnesses in Jerusalem; why is the statement of the mocking such an impossibility? V.13
_This Event in which Jesus proclaimed would take place, does not show even a small percentage of the capabilities given to a disciple by the Holy Spirit, through the workings of the Holy Spirit. But what does this passage alone tell us of the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Triune God?
+ HOW am I compelled to confess sin and how does the gospel compel me to respond with a simple step of action/obedience? (Here are some thoughts to discuss in break-outs)
_ Is there an area of your life that you are being invited to be a witness? If so, where and what is your next step this week?
_ Are you feeling a call to rely more heavily on the workings of the Holy Spirit? How does this look in your prayer life?
_ Is there a place that you are lacking power or strength? Is Jesus calling you to ask for power from the Holy Spirit through intentional prayer?
+ WHO are you walking with to discover or grow in Jesus and what is your next step with them, how can we help?
