Today is Tuesday, September 4th, 2017.  Today is our second day moving through the book of Acts - I am excited to learn with you! Today we join the disciples as they seek to replace Judas in their core group. Remember to join us this Sunday at our 9:00 or 10:45 gatherings!  - Peter

CONNECT
(Take time to write down responses to these questions or discuss in your group)

_ Have you ever made a decision that you regretted later? What would have aided you in making a better decision?
_ How is the Lord impacting someone you are walking with (to help grow in or discover Jesus)?

PRAY
Take some time to thank and praise God for who He is, to pray for those you are walking with, for the needs you/group are facing, and for the Spirit to open your heart and eyes as you read the passage, which has been completely inspired by God.

DISCOVER  [Acts 1:12-26]
+ WHAT is this passage saying and what do we learn? (Use these questions below each portion of text to clarify the main point)

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. 13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.

_ Previously in the chapter, Jesus tells the disciples that they will receive the Holy Spirit and make disciples in all the nations. What do they commit themselves to when they return to Jerusalem? Why is this important?
_ In the gospels, there are several instances of disunity among the disciples. How are they interacting now? (v.14)

15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, 16 “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.” 18 (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms,

“‘May his camp become desolate,

  and let there be no one to dwell in it’;

and

“‘Let another take his office.’

21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.”

_ What does Peter suggest that they do regarding Judas’ absence?
_ What is Peter’s basis for suggesting this? What is Peter relying on to make such a large decision? (V. 20)
_ What are the qualifications for the man to replace Judas? Why do they choose these requirements?

23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

_ There are arguments regarding whether or not casting lots was the best method to select the new disciple, however, the disciples took good steps leading up to this. What do they do in verse 24 that was significant in the choosing process? Whom do they seek?

+ HOW am I compelled to confess sin and how does the gospel compel me to respond with a simple step of action/obedience?  (Here are some thoughts to discuss in break-outs)

_ How many of my decisions are based off of the truth in God’s word and time in prayer?
_ How could my life be different if I spent more time doing these things?

+ WHO are you walking with to discover or grow in Jesus and what is your next step with them, how can we help?
