Today is Wednesday, September 27th, 2017. We are continuing our Autumn series through the book of Acts. In today’s passage we go on another adventure with Philip. Philip, an obedient follower of Jesus, acting under the direction of an angel of the Lord, starts out on a journey. Tuned in to the Holy Spirit’s direction, Philip is led directly to a seeker of the truth in the Word. This is a journey each of us can go on! Who is waiting for us to obey our direction from the Holy Spirit to share the Gospel with another wherever they are?
(Take time to write down responses to these questions or discuss in your group)
_ Tell of a time that you were moved to do something that you didn’t understand, but you did it anyway.
_ Tell of a time when you have been met, as an answer to prayer, by another right where you were.
_How is the Lord impacting someone you are walking with (to help grow in or discover Jesus)?
Lord, help us pray for belief. As we believe, help us share You, in all of your fullness, with others. Help us hear the Holy Spirit who will direct us. Help us proclaim your name with boldness, grace, and truth.
“How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” Romans 10:14-16

+ WHAT is this passage saying and what do we learn?
26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. 27 And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” 30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this:
“Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter
and like a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he opens not his mouth.
33 In his humiliation justice was denied him.
Who can describe his generation?
For his life is taken away from the earth.”
34 And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.
_ Imagine the conversation Philip had with an angel of the Lord in verse 26. What was happening in his day? Could he see the angel or did he just hear the direction? Have you ever had a re-direction in your day that was unexplained?
_ Look closely at Philip’s response. The angel was sending him to a DESERT road. How did he respond to this “choice” assignment? vs. 27 What do we respond when we are re-directed to a desert road in the middle of a hectic day.
_ Where did the Spirit direct Philip once he got to the desert road? Vs 29. Who was in the chariot? What where had he come from? What was he doing?
_ How did Philip respond to the Spirit’s direction? Look at the VERB! Because of his joy-filled, quick obedience to the Spirit’s call, what did he hear and then have the opportunity to DO? Vs 30-31
_What Scripture was the eunuch reading? (if you have time read this amazing Scripture in its entirety...do it!) In this Scripture, who does the pronoun “he” refer to? See Philip’s response to the eunuch’s question in 34-36.
_ Once the eunuch heard Philip proclaim the good news of Jesus, what happens? Vs 36-38
_ What happened to Philip when he came out of the water? What happened to the eunuch?
_ Where do we see Philip preaching the gospel again? Vs 40
+ HOW am I compelled to confess sin and how does the gospel compel me to respond with a simple step of action/obedience? (Here are some thoughts to discuss in break-outs)
_ Is there an area of your life that you are being asked to be a witness? If so, where and what is your next step this week?
_ Are you being faithful to the call? Are you available to the call? Are you teachable and humble as the Spirit moves in you?
+ WHO are you walking with to discover or grow in Jesus and what is your next step with them, how can we help?
