Today is Monday, September 4th, 2017, Labor Day!  Today we begin our Autumn series through the book of Acts.  In today’s passage we discover some of the background to the Acts narrative and our shared need for power.  I am so looking forward to journeying together through this incredibly rich account of the first Jesus' followers over the next couple of months.
grace + peace,
Joey

DISCOVER  [Acts 1.1-11]
+ WHAT is this passage saying and what do we learn? (Use these questions below the text to clarify the main point if needed)
In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach,2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes,11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
_ In vs. 1-3 we find that the account of Acts is a continuation of a previous book, what was Luke's first book and what was it about?
_ In vs. 4-5 after Jesus was raised from the dead why did he tell them to wait in Jerusalem?
_ In vs. 8 how does Jesus tell them they will receive power and for what purpose does this power come?
_ What is the geographical progression we find in vs. 8?
_ What happens in vs. 9?
_ In vs. 10-11 what does the angel tell the disciples as they were gazing to heaven?
_ What does this passage teach us about Jesus?, Power?, His Spirit?, or our calling as believers?

+ HOW am I compelled to confess sin and how does the gospel compel me to action with a simple step of obedience?  (To discuss in break-outs)
_ Is there an area of your life that you are being invited to be a witness?  If so, where and what is your next step this week?
_ Are there any area's Jesus is inviting you to patiently wait (vs. 4) trusting in what God has promised? If so, what area?
_ Is there a place that you are lacking power or strength?  Is Jesus calling you to ask for power from the Holy Spirit through intentional prayer?

+ WHO are you walking with to discover or grow in Jesus and what is your next step with them, how can we help resource you?
