Today is Wednesday, December 20th, 2017, Happy Wednesday, and hope you are having a merry time of Advent! As we continue the series “City of Peace”, we hear in the following scripture, the account of Jesus’ birth as Joseph takes Mary and himself to be registered. Please join us at our Gatherings, Sundays @ 9:00 and 10:45am - Max

Please take time to explore the undercurrent of humility in this passage. Why would the son of God be born in such a solemn way?

CONNECT
(Take time to write down responses to these questions or discuss in your group)

DISCOVER  [Luke 2:1-7]
+ WHAT is this passage saying and what do we learn?
(Use these questions below each portion of text to clarify the main point)

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

_ Who sent out the decree to have the world registered? Who was governor of Syria?
_What lineage does Joseph come from? Because of this, where was Joseph to have he and his wife registered? What prophecy does this fulfill, as Mary gives birth in the location where they are to register? (Micah 5:2)
_What is displayed of God as His only son, the messiah of Israel,  is born nonchalantly and laid into a feeding trough?
_Joseph and Mary are turned away from the inn ( For there was no room), as it comes time for Mary to give birth to Jesus. What does this foretell us of the life of Christ? (Isaiah 53)

Isaiah 53: 1-3   Who has believed our message

and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,

and like a root out of dry ground.

He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,

nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,

a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.

Like one from whom people hide their faces

he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

+ HOW am I compelled to confess sin and how does the gospel compel me to respond with a simple step of action/obedience?  (Here are some thoughts to discuss in break-outs)
_ How does this image of peace, stillness, and humility of the Christ being born convict you?
_ Are you spending time in the Word and in prayer, to hear the Lord speak to you? It is these two actions that leads us to repentance, as well as our daily callings to God’s will.

+ WHO are you walking with to discover or grow in Jesus and what is your next step with them, how can we help?
_Who can you tell the birth of Jesus to, as God was so humble to present him? Yet he is “Lord at thy birth”. (Freeman, Silent Night)
