Friday is here! In this brief but important passage we find two groups of people in relationship to Jesus- one who assumes relationship to him, one who he identifies in relationship to them. In this passage Jesus is radically redefining the definition of family and what it means to be in relationship to Jesus.
_ What is one thing you are thankful for today?
_ What is one thing that is overwhelming you?
_ How has Jesus been calling you to action/obedience? How has it gone since last time?
_ Who has Jesus placed in your life to intentionally walk with to love and help to discover his way (gospel)? How has it gone since last time?
Take some time to pray for those you are walking with, for the needs you are facing, and for the Holy Spirit to illuminate truth as you read during this time.
31 And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. 32 And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.” 33 And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”
+ WHAT is happening in this passage and what do we learn? (Say it or journal it in your own words or use these questions)
_ In vs. 31 who is on the outside standing?
_ In vs. 32 who is on the inside sitting? What do they say?
_ In vs. 33-34 how does Jesus respond?
_ What is Jesus' conclusion about family in vs. 35?
_ What is the posture of those Jesus calls his brother, sister and mother?
_ Are you standing on the outside assuming a relationship with Jesus or are you sitting at his feet on the inside?
+ HOW does the security of being included in Jesus' family compel you to action today? (In groups discuss this in guy/girl break-outs, use these questions to help)
_ To repent of assuming a relationship with Jesus?
_ To sit at the feet of Jesus?
_ To treat someone as a brother or sister that you have been harboring frustration with?
+ WHO do you know that is making demands of Jesus or not included in his family that you might share what you learned with today? (e.g., your family at dinner, a friend, co-worker or neighbor you are walking with to discover the message Jesus)
THESE DAILY POSTINGS ARE DESIGNED TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO ABIDE IN JESUS AND FOR GROUPS AS A GUIDE WHEN THEY MEET.
