Genesis 11.1-9 /// Tower of Babel

This guide is to help you to intentionally walk with others to grow in Christ based on a few of Jesus’ foundational commands.  This guide can be used with anyone, anywhere.  If you are part of another church feel free to adapt this guide as you facilitate.  Prepare for facilitating your group time by keeping a regular rhythm of time with Jesus in word and prayer, study the Scripture passage and guide below.  Reach out to our team with any questions.

STORIES  { ASKING WHO }

Begin by catching up, have everyone grab their coffee, drink or food and invite someone to open in a simple prayer.
+ Share This Week’s Church Wide Happenings... You can find them at www.downtownhope.org/happening.

+ Share Vision… We come together to grow in Jesus as we join his redemptive vision for the world that our family, friends, neighbors and co-workers might thrive with Hope.

+ Welcome Anyone New... Join in a time or or two and then commit (or not) so the group can include others while maintaining continuity.  For larger or co-ed groups we recommend visitors NOT participate in the break-outs (at the end) until they commit as sharing is sensitive in nature.

+ Ask... “WHO IS THE LORD CALLING YOU TO REACH WITH THE GOSPEL AND HAVE YOU HAD ANY OPPORTUNITIES TO INTENTIONALLY INVEST INTO THEIR LIVES SINCE THE LAST TIME WE WERE TOGETHER?” (e.g., Serve them, spend time with them, share the gospel, invite to a discovery study or begin growing in Christ through a group).  Matthew 28.16-20.

+ Pray… This is a time to pray boldly for the Lord to draw people to himself and for His kingdom to advance in our area (Acts 4.23-31).

SCRIPTURE  { ASKING WHAT }

Next study a portion of Scripture from last week’s reading. A group may substitute an alternative bible study for this section.  Encourage the group to develop a regular rhythm of  abiding in Jesus through the word and prayer by studying.

+ Weekly Reading:   Nov 13-19th: Gen 3-4.26 /// Nov. 20-26th: Gen. 5-11 /// Nov. 27-Dec. 3rd: Gen. 12-20
Dec. 4-10th: Gen. 21-25.18 /// Dec. 11-17th-18: Gen. 25.19-37.1 /// Dec. 18-25th Gen. 37.2-41.57
Dec. 15-31th-Gen. 42-50

+ Today’s Group Study- Genesis 11.1-9  (Read aloud as a group)

+ ASK...“WHAT HAS THE LORD HIGHLIGHTED TO YOU THROUGH THIS PASSAGE OR IN YOUR TIME IN THE WORD AND PRAYER SINCE LAST TIME WE WERE TOGETHER?"

+ Additional questions for a simple inductive study:
_ What are some of the main things that we find in this passage of Scripture?
_ How would you summarize or say them in your own words?
_ What are some of the repeated phrases in this passage?
_ What does this passage teach us about God?
_ What does this passage teach us about people?

STEPS  { ASKING HOW }

If the group is 6 or larger break out into co-ed micro groups of 3’s or 4’s.  Everything shared in these break-outs are confidential, facilitators should take prayer notes and text them to those in their break-outs.  Facilitators should follow-up from steps everyone committed to from the previous time.  Break-outs are also a safe space to share pastoral needs or life struggles with others.  Our Elder team and counseling/care team is available to assist if any major life struggles or circumstances arise.

+ ASK..."HOW IS THE HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTING YOU OF SIN TO CONFESS, AND FUELED BY GRACE, HOW DOES HE WANT TO EMPOWER YOU TO A SIMPLE STEP OF ACTION THIS WEEK?” (Mark 1.15, Matthew 22.34-40)
