As a consequence of Jonah running away from God, the ship he is using to escape, and the sailors in it, are endangered due to a storm. In the same way, when we run away from God and the mission He has for us, there is always collateral damage. Our self-centeredness causes us to turn a blind eye to the people around us. People who don't get too hear and experience the love of God we have been called to share because we are too busy running. In the story of Jonah, God's relentless pursuit of him eventually becomes a witness to the sailors, who end up worshipping the one true God. Just like in that story, God is also running after us, and when we surrender and stop running away, He can use whatever circumstances we find ourselves in, to show His love to the very people that we are ignoring now.
