A PLACE CALLED HOME

Downtown Hope,

The book of Joshua opens with Israel standing at the precipice of the Promised Land. The time had come to enter the land - to take hold of all that their covenant Lord had promised through the centuries.

God promised to be in a covenant relationship with His people in His appointed place. This place would be their home. For Israel, this place was the land of Canaan, which rests on the southeast corner of the Mediterranean sea. Israel was going home. This land was a gift from God for Israel to dwell and flourish in and serve the other nations of the world and make God famous in.

Moses has died, and a young leader named Joshua has been called to lead the nation home. The book of Joshua is the account of God’s faithfulness to his promise. And yet even as the Lord is bringing His people into the promised land, the nation faces many challenges. The land of promise was a land of struggle, hardship, and conflict. These challenges raise questions about Israel’s faith and trust in the Lord.

The book has four basic movements: entry into the land, conquering the land, inhabiting the land, and serving the Lord in the land. The nation’s faith is challenged on their journey home, for example, when Joshua was commissioned, when a prostitute harbored spies, when Achan hid his sin, when the sun stood still, and when the land was conquered and divided.

We all have a longing for home. When things are not right, we long to be home. When we’ve lost our way, we want to go home.  After a long day, we want to be home. Like the people of Israel, the question we must all answer is whether or not we will trust in God’s faithfulness in our journey. Ultimately God’s presence is the essence of home; that is where our souls are truly at rest.

Who Will We Serve? | Joshua 24.14-33

August 14, 2022 | JOHNNY LOWE

In this message, Jonny Lowe, a friend of our ministry, finishes our series in the book of Joshua. Joshua made a commitment that both he and his household would serve the Lord. It was through remembering God’s faithfulness, rejecting counterfeit gods, and yielding their hearts to God, remaining resolute and accountable to one another collectively that provided the motivation. Our hearts are wired to worship and serve someone, but what or who we will serve this day, is the big question.

As the book of Joshua winds down, in chapter 24.1-13 the Lord reminds the nation of His faithfulness. In this message Joey walks us through these verses to consider how God’s faithfulness to fulfilling His promises forges in us radical humility.

Joshua is a fascinating book demonstrating God’s faithfulness to HIs people. This book is also filled with much war and many people dying. What are we to do with this? What are we to do with the passages that say certain people were devoted to destruction? In this message we discover this book’s beauty and reconcile some of the challenging passages.

Idols, Brokenness and Healing | Joshua 7.1-26

July 10, 2022 | JOEY TOMASSONI

We all have temptation and sin patterns in our lives that we wish we were free from. Israel was no different. Even as the Lord was faithfully providing a place called home for the nation, they found themselves struggling with old patterns in attempts to provide for themselves. The temptation to sin is part of the human condition; the question is how do we break free? In this message Joey walks us through Joshua 7 to discover where sin comes from, why we continue to indulge, and how we experience freedom.

The Commander of the Lord’s Army | Joshua 5.13-15

July 3, 2022 | DAVID BEMPONG

In this message we continue our series A Place Called Home: God’s Faithfulness In The Book Of Joshua.

A Pep Talk from God | Joshua 1.1-9

June 26, 2022 | CHRIS ADOMANIS

Most of us have been the recipient of a good pep talk, either from a coach, a teacher, a parent, a boss, a spouse, or just a close friend. Joshua faced the incredibly difficult task of leading the Israelite nation into the Promised Land. His friend and mentor Moses was dead. How could he ever fill the shoes of The Mighty Deliverer? Would God keep His promises for the nation of Israel? In this message we explore what God said to Joshua that encouraged him and can be an encouragement to us as we start our journey in a series titled A Place Called Home; God’s Faithfulness in the Book of Joshua.
